More than 70 participants, including many local and international companies, took part in business-to-business meeting in Goma to negotiate and sign trade commitments. At the end of the day, 18,000 MT of grains were committed to, for a total value of about $6 million. The deals will be structured and closed over the next few months.

As part of improving market access in the agriculture and horticulture sector, ELAN RDC partner, EAGC (www.eagc.org), organized the business-to-business meeting in Goma at the end of August. The event brought together buyers and sellers of grains, agricultural machinery, inputs as well as banks to meet and trade. Buyers and sellers from the East African Community (EAC) region also met with their Congolese counterparts to build networks and help grow regional trade.

Such an approach is a step towards increased cross-border trade and also opens up new opportunities for local production in the DRC. In the long term, improved cross-border trade and local production opportunities should strengthening food security in the region.

A second business-to-business meeting was held in Lubumbashi on September 12, in which over 22,400 MT of grains, worth more than $14.6 million, assorted grain handling equipment and machinery were signed for supply.
