Standardized units of measurement in Kalemie
In Kalemie, ELAN RDC partner CAPAM is pushing to better integrate smallholder farmers into larger markets by using kilograms for agricultural commodities in place of local measures.
Unlike other goods, grain is usually measured using small containers, particularly by small sellers in local markets. CAPAM (Comité des acheteurs de produits agricoles de Moba) has sought to introduce the balance as a measurement tool in thirteen pilot grain depots throughout Kalemie. The intervention, which was launched in June, was the subject of a radio and television awareness campaign.
Standardizing measurements increases market transparency. As a result, comparing prices between vendors or different markets becomes easier. This should allow Kalemie to better integrate with other local and regional markets.
