Seedstars Kinshasa showcases the best of Congolese start-ups

Seedstars, the world´s largest emerging markets start-up competition, came to DRC for the second edition of Seedstars Kinshasa, organised by Ingenious City, ÉLAN RDC partner and Seedstars’ DRC ambassador, and ÉLAN RDC. Around two hundred people gathered at Ingenious City to see the business pitches of the 10 finalists.

Schoolap, an online platform that connects school teachers, parents and students, won the competition and will be representing DRC in the regional event in Tanzania in December, and in the Global Summit in Switzerland in April 2019. In those two events, Schoolap will have the opportunity to meet other start-ups from all over the world, receive mentoring from top notch mentors and connect with international investors. These opportunities will help promote the visibility of the DRC entrepreneurial ecosystem, attracting more attention from the international community.

One of ÉLAN RDC’s renewable energy partners, Altech, finished in third place. Altech pitched their new improved cook stove product range, which features integrated pay as you go technology.

During the same week, ÉLAN RDC and Ingenious City also organised a 4-day training for incubator managers which was provided by the Seedstars team. The training gave around 20 incubator managers the opportunity to sharpen their skills for running an incubator, while discussing challenges for the entrepreneurial ecosystem in DRC.

Both the start-up competition and the incubator training were positive steps towards improving the Congolese ecosystem for the entrepreneurs to develop their businesses.
